SPRINGFIELD – As school reopening continues and spring break approaches, Willamalane has expanded childcare and youth programming options for families. Beginning March 29, Willamalane Kids Club after-school programs will return to Thurston, Douglas Gardens and Yolanda elementary schools.
Kids Club programs will run 2:30-6 p.m. on school days. Full-day Wednesday care is also included.
Program capacity is limited to 20 students per site, and families must register weekly. Willamalane also will offer full-day Wednesday only care at Bob Keefer Center beginning March 31. Learn more at willamalane.org/youth.
–New safety measures for Creslane: A new area for unloading and loading students from buses and more efficient routes for buses have been implemented. Joel Higdon, director of technology, said the measures will help avoid overcrowding and avoiding the mixing of cohort groups. The District is adding new gravel to an existing access road along the eastern side of CSD property. Only buses and school vehicles will be allowed on the access road and in the unloading and loading zone. An assessment was completed by Lane County Sheriff’s deputies over two years, which helped shape the new policies.
–Library accessible for every student: All Springfield students have access to the library, including students who live outside of city limits. The “For Every Student A Library” program received $10,000 from Springfield Public Schools and a $3,500 grant from Springfield Rotary. “Keeping library resources accessible to all Springfield students at no cost to them, no matter where they live, is an important way we can invest in our future leaders,” said library director Emily David. Money is used to support classroom curriculum, homework, and tutoring through the Library’s database BrainFuse. The grant money is also used to purchase additional copies of high-demand books, or to replace worn-out copies.
