PeopleReady launches workforce training program for in-demand jobs

PORTLAND, OR – January 4, 2021 – As many job sectors in Oregon continue to struggle in an unpredictable economy and the state faces a near 7% unemployment rate, the skilled trades are booming. But the number of skilled trade jobs is far outpacing the supply of qualified workers. Staffing leader PeopleReady’s skilled trades division is aiming to change that, launching a training program to bring more state residents into the skilled trades.

 The new program consists of a mix of remote and in-person socially distanced classes—including hands-on training sessions—with the goal of graduating classes of skilled workers to help meet the demand for skilled trade jobs. Graduates of the program will receive one-on-one job coaching and access to PeopleReady Skill Trades’ pipeline of in-demand jobs in the state. The pilot program in Oregon will serve as a national model to address skilled trade labor shortages across the nation.

 Based on the company’s analysis of thousands of skilled trade jobs in Oregon posted between October and November of 2020, some of the most in-demand jobs and highest labor shortage areas in the state include:

* Carpenter helpers (the focus of the first PeopleReady class, which saw a 38% increase in posts)

* Electrician helpers (100% increase)

* Carpenters (50% increase)

* Roofer apprentices (33% increase)

* Electricians (20% increase)

* Plumbers (83% increase)

 “Skilled trades is one of the few areas where jobs hold strong in an economic downturn. Right now, we are seeing a high demand for skilled labor in Oregon and not enough qualified workers to fill the jobs,” said Jill Quinn, executive leader of PeopleReady Skilled Trades.

“Skilled trade jobs can make a real difference for people looking for work in this economy, and our focus is to provide people with the training they need to connect to those jobs.”
