Year In Review: After wildfire destruction, a community responds

The raging fires moved swiftly and intensely.

Wildfires destroyed parts of Lane County, threatened others, and delayed the start of school as thousands of Oregonians were evacuated. Those who fled to safety were in shock from the loss of their homesteads, their pets, their missing neighbors and loved ones.

Recovery efforts at Silke Field in Springfield were set up immediately.

The Holiday Farm fire began the windy night of Sept. 7 along the McKenzie River. Within a week, it consumed nearly 170,000 acres, destroyed hundreds of houses and structures, and threatened thousands more. With hot, dry weather and areas difficult to access, containment of the fire was minimal for weeks before it was successfully under control in October.

The fires were visible from throughout the southern Willamette Valley.
