CRESWELL – Residents and city leaders reacted quickly to a social media post that stated a Black Lives Matter rally was scheduled for City Hall, 13 S. 1st St., on Sept. 27 from 5:30-8 p.m.
The Chronicle unsuccessfully attempted reach someone with the account – Eugene Antifa – by email and Facebook.
Sergeant Scott Denham of the Lane County Sheriff’s Office said his team is aware of the post.
“It is quite a ways out so we will continue to monitor it as we get closer to see how much steam it has,” he said.
The Facebook posting generated more than 300 comments, including anti-BLM sentiments that encouraged violence. The counter-protest has Denham concerned, too, he said.
“We will also be monitoring the counter-argument as that is much louder in this area than BLM. There has been no application for a march or any other road-blocking requirement,” he said. “As long as they are peaceful and stay out of the street, we won’t do any more than we do for the flag-wavers, who I expect will be out.”
