Letter to the Editor – Springfield expansion is big news

Dear Editor:

August is a great month for Springfield and a great month for The Chronicle. In just a few days, The Chronicle, formerly the Creswell Chronicle for over 100 years, will open an office in Springfield. This will be the first time that a local subscription newspaper has had an office in Springfield in many years. I can only imagine the courage it takes for a small business (a local newspaper) to open a new office during a recession and in the middle of a pandemic. Yet, it is happening right here in Springfield this month!

It was only a year ago that the 110-year old Creswell Chronicle changed its name to The Chronicle to reflect their commitment to hyperlocal news coverage of our communities. News coverage in Springfield has improved tremendously since the paper made the commitment to Springfield as part of its regular reporting.

Coverage of local news is vitally important. It includes everything from stories about cultural events and initiatives, school events, civic organizations, clubs, religious organizations, and local government. This is critical to parents, grandparents, residents, and decision-makers. It’s also important to all of the volunteers working to make their community a better place. Finally, it’s important to cover local businesses and their contributions to our community, as well as the advertising that lets residents know about their services.

A local newspaper is a reflection on the quality of a community. It is a sign of the vitality and success of a community. Thank you for your coverage of Springfield.
