Community Food for Creswell is partnering with local agencies to provide 130 food packs a week.

Children receive snack packs, summer meals

Over the course of eight weeks, Community Food for Creswell has distributed supplemental food boxes each Friday alongside the FOOD for Lane County Summer Meals Program at Creslane Elementary School.

The program will also be offering Farm to Family produce boxes to each family that comes to pick up food for their children, and are preparing for an increase in distribution, since in past weeks they upped it from 70 to 110 children.

Their budget will also provide 130 food packs per week.

Food packs include: string cheese, granola bars, bread, peanut butter, peaches and macaroni and cheese.

Community Food for Creswell is in partnership with FOOD for Lane County, United Way of Lane County and Cottage Grove Grocery Outlet.

Local salon offers free haircuts in August

Whether students are returning to the classroom or learning from home, Emerald Valley Salon wants to still offer students a free, back-to-school hair cut.

On Saturday, Aug. 22 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Emerald Valley Salon will be offering on a first-come, first-serve basis free simple, basic haircuts to families in their salon.

Patricia Cook, manager of Emerald Valley Salon, said that she used to volunteer at Party in the Park, but with COVID-19 the Faith Center still undecided on the event, Cook decided to continue it.

Especially because when Cook took over the salon in November after the passing of its former manager, she said the community was very supportive of her.

“We just need to be kind to those who are struggling right now and this is one way to help them,” she said.

Cook said the salon has an open lobby so people waiting can socially distance, and they will be wearing masks. Customers will check in on a sign-in sheet. Along with Cook, stylists Tauschia Arneson and Shilo Drago will be volunteering as well.

Cook said that she was a single mom at one point and how it was sometimes a struggle to provide for the family.

She said there’s a lot of single parents in Creswell and she wants to give back something.

“This I can do, this is something I can afford to do and I know the need is there,” she said. “Every time we volunteer there’s so many parents that can’t get them in any time of the year, they really need this.”

SLSD confirms first COVID-19 case

South Lane School District posted a note on its Facebook page announcing its first confirmed case of a studnet with COVID-19.

Although the student, who attends Cottage Grove High School, has not been on campus, they have attended summer workouts in close proximity to others.

As a precaution, and until receiving recommendations from Lane County Public Health, summer workouts are suspended.

Group offers advice for new homeschoolers

The Coalition for Responsible Home Education (CRHE) has developed an online course for new home schooling families, which will begin on Aug. 3 and run for eight weeks.

The course will cover a variety of topics such as educational philosophies and instructional techniques, as well as walk parents through the process of choosing curricular materials and getting started homeschooling.

Enrollment is open through July 31.

New requirements for face coverings

ODE is requiring face coverings for all students and staff in K-12.

ODE will distribute 5 million face coverings to school districts. The coverings are donated by Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and are called KN95 masks. These are defined as coverings and not masks, because they are not considered medical-grade.
