Naomi Mae Toedtemeier McGarry was born in Halsey, Ore., on Aug. 30, 1933 and entered peacefully into glory on March 10, 2020 with family at her side.
Her parents were Maryann Thompson and Homer Ivan Toedtemeier. Naomi’s siblings are Marjorie Noble and Robert Earl.
On July 3, 1950, Naomi was married to Robert Campbell McGarry. Together they raised seven children: Valerie Jean, Edgar Braderick, Robert Homer, Valina Jane, Michael Patrick, Vashti Jewel and Vanessa Pearl. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren total 49 and counting!
Like a multi-faceted diamond, she has served many other roles as well with a signature flair and diplomacy. She was an active member of the body of Christ and remembered most for her strong faith in God which motivates Naomi to help others in genuine ways. During difficult times, she has said, ”Family, faith and caring friends give me courage to keep going: to trust that tomorrow will be better.”
She graduated from Central Linn High School in Brownsville, Ore., and has attended American River College in Sacramento, Calif., studying food management. Naomi was the first woman to serve on the Gervais, Ore. City Council, later becoming the mayor, retirement center manager, corporate business owner, teacher aide, foster parent, field laborer in many Willamette Valley harvests including hops, cherries, beans and berries; these are but a few of her endeavors.
Mrs. McGarry’s hobbies and interests included sewing, quilting, crocheting, stamp collecting, reading, hunting, teaching Sunday school classes, scherenschnitte, ceramics, traveling, music, theater and the arts.
Always the lady, Naomi has offered to many her wise counsel and guidance in astyle that is known for its authenticity, reality and sincerity. Her no-nonsense approach to life is contagious, creating in others an inspiration to be all one can be. She has been ushered in through heaven’s door and is in the presence of the LORD. Naomi joins her beloved husband, Robert Campbell, sister, Marjorie, two sons, Edgar Braderick and Michael Patrick, grandson, Marlin Bradley and granddaughter, Naomi Eve.
