Nancy Newton chosen for Springfield city manager position

SPRINGFIELD – Contract negotiations are underway with Nancy Newton to serve as the new Springfield city manager.
The role has been temporarily filled since June 2019 by pro tem Mary Bridget Smith, following former manager Gino Grimaldi’s retirement after 13 years with the City. There was a recruitment effort with three finalists, but ultimately no candidate was selected for the position, said Amber Fosson, public information officer for the City.
Five finalists were interviewed in January, which included interviews with the city’s executive team, the mayor and council, and a community meet and greet. The search narrowed to Raymond Lee and Newton.
”Nancy brings a wealth of experience and is very dedicated to public service,” Springfield Mayor Christine Lundberg said. ”She’s also energized about Springfield and we want that for our community.
On Monday, March 2, the Mayor Christine Lundberg and council will discuss the contract in public session. A final contract could be approved at the March 16 council meeting.
Since 2016, Newton has been the assistant county executive/chief operating officer for Sacramento County, Calif. She has over 10 years of local government management experience, including as interim and as a deputy county administrator for Clackamas County, Ore.
Newton has a bachelor’s degree in management and organizational leadership from George Fox University and a master’s degree in public administration from Portland State University.
Since 2016, Lee has been the public works director for the City of Amarillo, Texas. He has over 10 years of local government management, including working for the City of Dallas, Texas, as assistant director of street services and as a business manager for library services in the same city.
”We are excited to see how Springfield will continue to grow under her helm,” Lundberg said.
