AROUND THE STATE

CHEER – South Albany won its fifth consecutive cheerleading state championship on Saturday, Feb. 15 in Portland. … After missing out on first place in the 6A division last year by 0.4 points, Newberg returned this year to stand at the top of the podium in first place, beating David Douglas by 0.3 point. Prior to its loss in 2019, Newberg had won six state titles in a row from 2013 to 2018. … After winning four straight state championships in the 6A division, Westview competed in a new division, the Coed Small division, at the OSAA Cheerleading State Championships in and took home its fifth consecutive championship.
GIRLS BASKETBALL – After a win at Junction City last week, the Cottage Grove girls basketball team clinched the Sky-Em title to remain undefeated in league up to that point. CGHS played its last league game at home against Marist after this issue went to press. Check OSAA.org for scores and updates. … Oregon Episcopal clinched the Lewis and Clark League title; Sutherlin clinched the Far West League title and is undefeated in the regular season; and Vale, also undefeated, clinched the Eastern Oregon League title.
BOYS BASKETBALL – Marist Catholic remains undefeated in the Sky-Em League and is ranked No. 1 in the 4A classification going into the postseason. Out of the 34 teams in the 4A class, only eight of them have allowed fewer points this season than the Spartans, who have only allowed 985 points all season. … Salem Academy clinched the PacWest League title and are currently undefeated in the regular season. Rainier clinched the Coastal Range League title and are undefeated in the regular season, as is Nyssa, who clinched the Eastern Oregon League title.
