CHS parents seeking support for seniors

CRESWELL – Parents of Creswell High School senior students are trying to preserve a few of the traditional activities and memories surrounding graduation.

Dave Leavitt, the father of two seniors, posted an appeal for community support on social media this week. He explained that typical fundraisers could not be held the past few months, and financial resources are too tight to provide seniors the usual congratulatory rewards they would normally receive.

“So we are calling upon anyone, or any businesses that would like to donate anything, to help the parent group still make this a memorable year for the graduating class of 2020,” he wrote on social media.

Leavitt said fundraising efforts through the annual auction/banquet, and concessions revenues from spring sporting events, have left the parents group strapped for cash. Normally, he said, parents throw a party for seniors where they are rewarded for service throughout the year, but physical distancing and the governor’s orders made that impossible.

Leavitt said seniors earn points throughout the school year by volunteering and performing other service-focused work. This allowed those students to bid on specific prizes or improve their chances of winning gifts based upon their total number of tickets acquired through the year.

Now, those students who worked to acquire those tickets will not be able to use them. And the parents don’t have the money to purchase the rewards in the first place.

Leavitt said anyone interested in donating should contact him or Mandy Hoggard through their Facebook profiles.

The Chronicle is planning extensive graduation coverage through June. The paper will be publishing senior portraits, “cord” achievements, scholarship winners, and much more from all of the schools in the southern Willamette Valley, including Creswell, Cottage Grove, Pleasant Hill, Springfield High School, Thurston and the Academy of Arts and Academics.

Stay tuned throughout June and don’t miss out on the coverage of the schools, teachers, students and parents you care about!
