CHS: THE WEEK AHEAD

BOYS BASKETBALL
Wednesday, Feb. 5
CHS at Santiam Christian, 7:30 p.m.
Friday, Feb. 7
CHS at La Pine, 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday, Feb. 11
CHS vs. PHHS, 7:30 p.m.
Why2Watch: Creswell remains undefeated in the Mountain Valley League, holding strong with an eight-game winning streak and a four-game cushion over second place. Upsets happen, off-nights happen and somehow surprises sneak up on us. Tyler Frieze was held to a season-low of 9 points last they met Santiam Christian, La Pine’s bus trip can lead to odd results and Pleasant Hill will always make a fan nervous because it’s the longtime rivals that can somehow get under your skin. Three of the last five games the Bulldogs have remaining are on the road so catch a home game while you still can.
Coach speaks: “Every team wants to be the team to knock off an undefeated team. We just have to get a little bit better at what we know to do, every day. It’s just making sure that we stay hyper focused on the details, offensively and defensively, “ said coach Jesse Thomas.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Wednesday, Feb. 5
CHS at Santiam Christian, 6 p.m.
Friday, Feb. 7
CHS at La Pine, 6 p.m.
Tuesday, Feb. 11
CHS vs. PHHS, 6 p.m.
Why2Watch: This week the Bulldogs continued a 10-day stretch where they play five games against four different Top 10 teams. Even with the difficult schedule, coach Tyler Hollingsworth said their biggest rival is themselves. In the preseason, Creswell averaged 24 turnovers that their opponents turned into an average of 10 points per game. During the regular season, those numbers increase to 28 turnovers turned into 15 points.
Coach speaks: “Depending on if the girls want to buy into it this week, I think it’s possible for us to win all three games this week. I’m not even trying to be greedy. I wouldn’t care if they won or lost if they put in a winning level of effort. We just have to keep trying to get better every day, every week and every game.”

CHEERLEADING
Saturday, Feb. 8
Up next: Tualatin Last Chance Competition, Tualatin HS.
Why2Watch: When they say last chance, they mean it. Creswell has one shot left to qualify for state and they need it. The Bulldogs won’t qualify to perform in Portland unless they produce one more routine that meets the guidelines. Creswell will be performing the same routine as last week in Springfield but coach Christine Bandey is hoping they’ll make the adjustments necessary to be
Coach speaks: “We are going to adjust some stunts so that were more confident in them, try to add some difficulty points and work on our dance and timing. We can see the finish line and we are full on sprinting towards it,” said Bandey.

WRESTLING
Up next: Thurston hosts OSAA Southern Division Girls State Regional Friday, Feb. 7 – Saturday, Feb. 8.
Why2Watch: Each team is allowed to bring three participants to Regionals, which is the girls district tournament, qualifying the top four student-athletes for the state championships, which are right around the corner, Feb. 14 and Feb. 15. The 3A classification is the only one in the six classes that will have a 12-man bracket, vs. the eight-man bracket from last year.
Coach speaks: “These girls are such fierce competitors that they make it easy on me. No matter what happens at regionals, they’ve already made such a huge difference for future female wrestlers and they should be proud of what they’ve already accomplished this season,” said coach Mario Perez.
