CRESWELL – Middle linebacker Caleb Wilson was named 2019 Co-Defensive Player of the Year for the 2A Central Valley Conference and four other Bulldog defensive linemen received recognition when All-League football teams were announced.
On the season Wilson, a junior, made 101 tackles (nine for loss), two sacks, a fumble recovery, an interception and a pass deflection.
As the Bulldogs’ anchor on defense, Wilson ”had an outstanding season,” said coach Scott Worsham. ”He’s a true middle linebacker if I ever saw one; he filled holes and made some big-time tackles all season. He’s been counted on all season to help stop the opposing teams’ running game.”
Wilson also made Second Team as a running back (nine catches for 111 yards, with two touchdowns; 65 rushes for 263 yards with two touchdowns and three fumbles).
”Offensively he was counted on to run the ball hard and gain some tough yards for us, and at times broke through with some long runs,” Worsham said.
Dallton Dewey, a senior, earned First Team honors as a defensive back (25 tackles, three interceptions, three pass deflections, two touchdowns), Second Team as a punter (26, averaging 34.34 yards) and Honorable Mention as a quarterback (58 of 113 passes completed for 860 yards, six touchdowns, a two-point conversion and five interceptions; 167 rushes for 756 yards, 14 TDs, five fumbles).
”Dallton’s an unbelievable football talent,” Worsham said. ”He led us offensively all season with his ability to scramble, his jump cuts to make defenders miss tackles, and throwing money balls to receivers. He just has an uncanny ability to escape and make big plays happen.”
And defensively, with a pick-six, a punt return for a TD and several pass deflections, ”no QB wanted to throw in his direction or he’d make them pay for it.”
Logan Johnson, a senior, was First Team as an offensive lineman and a defensive lineman (46 tackles – 14 for loss – two sacks, four fumble recoveries, an interception, a punt block and a TD.)
”He was the anchor of our offensive line. For an undersized lineman he had the best technique, blocked extraordinarily well, pulled out in front on a lot of sweeps and cleared the way for runners,” Worsham said. ”Defensively, he messed up a lot of our opponents’ running plays and was in the backfield a lot, making tackles for loss.”
Tyler Nicol, a junior, made First Team as a receiver (23 catches for 294 yards with two TDs and a two-point conversion) and Second Team as a defensive lineman (27 tackles – four for loss – two sacks, two fumble recoveries and three pass deflections).
”Tyler was our best wide receiver; he made some bigtime catches all season and was a big target for Dallton to throw to,” Worsham said. ”Defensively, teams had a hard time running to the outside his way as he did a great job containing sweeps.”
Nano Giffen made Second Team as a kicker, making 16-of-17 point-after attempts. ”He has the best leg in the league, had some boots fly into the end zone for touchbacks and in practice could knock down 50-yard field goals,” Worsham said (Giffen was 0-for-4 on FG attempts in games).
Tyler Atwood, a junior, received Honorable Mention as both an offensive and a defensive lineman (36 tackles – nine for loss – three sacks, an interception, five pass deflections and a punt block).
”He came into his own as a solid football player this season; he honed his skills both offensively and defensively,” Worsham said. ”His blocking skills helped us be able to run and pass the ball in crucial situations, and at DE was a big nuisance for other teams.”
Reece Germen, a sophomore, received Honorable Mention as a defensive lineman (27 tackles – five for loss – two sacks).
”This kid loves football. He works hard, is a tough kid, and became a great defensive lineman,” Worsham said. ”He made some big plays at the line of scrimmage.”
