CHS Bulldogs: Week in Review

FOOTBALL
Game: at Regis, Oct. 25
Results: Creswell won 20-6
Recap: The Rams took their first drive down to about the 15-yard line, and the Bulldogs forced a turnover on downs as it was scoreless after the first quarter. Creswell scored with about 35 seconds left before halftime, as Caleb Wilson made a 2-yard TD run. Nano Giffen’s extra-point kick was good and Creswell took a 7-0 lead into the locker room. In the third period, QB Dallton Dewey scored for the Dawgs on a 62-yard punt return, and Giffen added the PAT. ”Dallton probably made all 11 guys miss him on that run,” said coach Scott Worsham. ”He was weaving back and forth, guys were shifting, and he just kept somehow making it through, and kept going. It was fun to watch.” Regis scored after intercepting a pass for Creswell’s only turnover of the game, and Tyler Nicol answered by catching a 25-yard TD pass from Dewey. An errant snap led to a missed PAT.
Creswell offensive stats: Dewey went 11-of-16 for 164 yards through the air, with one TD pass and one INT. Receiving, Nicol made 4 catches for 89 yards, with 1 TD; Wilson made 3 catches for 41 yards. Dewey had 26 rushes for 52 yards.
Creswell defensive stats: Giffen made 14 tackles (1 for loss, 1 sack); Wilson had 11 tackles; Juan Beltran made 7 tackles (2 for loss); Reece Germen made 5 tackles (2 for loss, 1 sack); Dewey made 5 tackles and 1 fourth-quarter INT; Tyler Atwood made 4 tackles and 4 pass deflections ”at times when we really needed those passes to not be completed,” Worsham said.
Reflections: ”We were two pretty well-matched teams; we just came out and played better football. Our defense was strong all game long; at key moments, they stopped them, and I’m proud of how we played,” Worsham said. ”We only gave up one turnover, and other than that we did a great job stopping their passing and their running game. It was a great win.”

VOLLEYBALL
Game: at Santiam Christian, Oct. 22
Results: Creswell fell to Santiam Christian 2-3: 25-18, 16-25, 14-25, 26-24, 12-15.
Recap: The third-ranked Lady Dawgs took the top-ranked Eagles to five sets before falling. Creswell trailed 6-12 in the final set before losing 12-15.
Creswell stats: Breanna Dapron paced Creswell with 16 kills and 22 digs. Kylee Whitson had 13 kills; Jenessa Mallory – a starting setter who subbed in to play back row only in the final two sets due to illness – recorded 6 kills, with no hitting errors, 17 assists and 3 aces; libero Jane Marquess scooped 23 digs; Sarah Lanz had 22 digs and 4 aces; Bryndal Olson had 13 assists; and Bailey Hutchinson had two solo stuff blocks.
Reflections: ”The girls played fantastic. It was a really good night – a fun night,” said coach Anna Baltrusch. ”We were speeding up our offense, changing up our rotation a little bit; the girls were really pleased with how well they played, and so was I.”
Game: vs. Harrisburg, Oct. 24
Results: Creswell downed Harrisburg 3-1: 14-25, 25-18, 25-12, 25-18.
Recap: It was Senior Night for the third-ranked Bulldogs, and they were looking for payback after falling to now eighth-ranked Eagles in four sets on the road on Oct. 8. All five seniors – Whitson, Marquess, Mallory, Makaela Seiber and Ashley Miller – got the start, thanks to some lineup adjustments; the Lady Dawgs racked up hitting errors in dropping the first set, but came out with renewed energy and determination, finding their rhythm in the second set. In each of the sets where the Eagles battled to 18 points, Creswell built substantial leads before allowing Harrisburg back into the game. The teams meet again in a league playoff this week, but both already are assured state playoff games, behind league champion Santiam Christian.
Creswell stats: Dapron led with 22 kills and 17 digs. Whitson had 6 kills; Mallory had 4 kills, 23 assists, 2 assisted stuff blocks and 3 aces; Marquess had 25 digs; Lanz had 22 digs and 3 aces and Hutchinson had 2 assisted stuff blocks.
Reflections: ”That first set was really emotional; Harrisburg’s a tough team to play and things were not going well,” Baltrusch said. ”But the girls knew their errors were things they could control; they fixed their own stuff, and things started going their way.”

BOYS’ SOCCER
Game: at East Linn Christian, Oct. 22
Results: Creswell downed East Linn Christian 3-2.
Recap: Playing on an extremely muddy field following two days of rain, ELC scored first, Creswell answered and ELC scored again to take a 2-1 halftime lead. The Bulldogs tied up things about five minutes into the second half and controlled the ball throughout much of the period, relentlessly attacking ELC’s defense despite missing a number of opportunities to score additional goals. East Linn Christian went on the attack during the final 10 minutes, but the Dawgs held on to win.
Creswell stats: Creswell had 17 shots to ELC’s 10 in the first half and 10 shots to their 3 in the second half. Alex Metteer scored the Bulldogs’ first-half goal, assisted by Grant Marshall; in the second half, Marshall scored twice with shots placed into the upper corner of the net: the first, off an assist from Brian Clowers and the second, assisted by Cam Nguyen. Creswell GK Jayden Pratt made 10 saves.
Reflections: ”We had some really, really good opportunities right in front of their goal – and that’s been our story all season: not being able to finish,” coach Brandi Wittenborn said. ”But it was very exciting to get the win and tie East Linn Christian for third in league.”
Game: vs. Jefferson, Oct. 24
Results: Creswell defeated Jefferson 3-0.
Recap: The Bulldogs were not to be denied the victory on Senior Night, despite losing to Jefferson on the road earlier this season. Creswell scored one goal in the first half, and the score remained 1-0 until late in the second half, when the Dawgs scored two more within six minutes, finding the back of the net that had been denied them in their dozen or more shots on goal in the game.
Creswell stats: Senior Sky Leach scored Creswell’s first-half goal, off an assist from Nguyen. In the second half, Dawson Sharkey collected a shot missed by Marshall and scored; and Marshall scored the Bulldogs’ final goal, assisted by Leach. Pratt made 8 saves in goal.
Reflections: Led by Rogelio Legorreta, ”our defense pretty much shut them down in the second half,” Wittenborn said. She noted that after tying second-place Central Linn on Friday, ELC had regained a half-game lead over Creswell in league standings with one game remaining, so the Bulldogs’ league and state playoff hopes rest on tying or beating Central Linn this week.

GIRLS’ SOCCER
Game: vs. Pleasant Hill, Oct. 22
Results: Creswell fell 2-0.
Recap: The Billies scored within the first 10 minutes on a free kick by Madison Quick. The senior forward scored again late in the second half after a breakaway had her going one-on-one with Creswell goalkeeper Carley Wilkerson.
Creswell stats: The Lady Dawgs had 3 shots – 1 by Maddie Boettcher and 2 by Anna Dahl – to the Billies’ 8. Wilkerson made 4 saves in goal.
Reflections: ”We’ve had trouble all year getting our offensive flow going, and that early goal kind of took the starch out of us,” said coach Dan Smathers.
Game: at La Pine, Oct. 24
Results: The Lady Dawgs beat the Hawks 3-2.
Recap: Once again, Creswell faced an early deficit, as the Hawks’ Italy Gonzalez scored on a free kick. But this time, the Lady Dawgs responded, tying the score with a free kick of their own. Gonzalez responded with another outside shot and La Pine took a 2-1 lead into halftime. Creswell tied it early in the second half and took the lead for good with about 20 minutes remaining in the game on another outside shot.
Creswell stats: Dahl scored on an outside free kick in the first half. In the second half, Oreanna Ekburg dribbled in and scored with an assist by Dahl; and later, Dahl scored again on an outside shot that rolled between the Hawks’ goalkeeper’s legs and into the net. In goal, Wilkerson had 6 saves in 60 minutes and Carter Kruger had 4 saves in the final 20 minutes of the game. ”There was a lot of panic and anxiety as La Pine consistently attacked our defense, once we went up 3-2, so those last four saves by Carter were important ones,” Smathers said.
Reflections: ”We’ve played strong defense all year, but we finally mixed in some offense and the girls were so excited to get the win,” Smathers said. ”It certainly made the long trip home from La Pine a lot more fun. Win or lose, it’s just been an incredible experience coaching these girls; they’re wonderful people and teammates, and coaching them has been one of the better sporting experiences of my life.”

CROSS COUNTRY
Meet: at Country Fair Classic, Richardson Park in Eugene, Oct. 23
Team results: The Creswell boys placed 15th in team standings that included teams from larger schools. The Bulldogs were third among 3A/2A/1A teams. Sheldon placed first with 40 points and Crater second with 42. Creswell fielded an incomplete girls’ team. South Eugene was first with 30 points and Crater second with 63.
Individual results: In the boys’ 5,000m, Brandon Moehlmann placed 22nd of 185 runners in 17:13, Josiah Lee placed 40th in 17:36, Jackson Velarde finished 117th in 19:35.2, Seth Handman finished 120th in 19:44.9, Jackson Parker finished 123rd in 19:54.1, Nick Kubishta finished 125th in 19:59.3, Chris Culp finished in 22:48.9 and Gonzalo Cardenas finished in 28:36.1. In the girls’ 5k, Leona Marquess placed 61st of 143 runners in 22:54.3 and Harmony Goodman finished 87th in 24:17.7.
Notable: This week, the Bulldogs compete at the Special District 4 Championships at LCC. Last year, Moehlmann, as a sophomore, was Creswell’s only state qualifier, and the Bulldogs boys placed third in team standings – one place out of qualifying for state – despite racing only freshmen and sophomores at district.
