Population concerns

Letter to the Editor:

I was pleased to see a guest column on human population increase and the adverse effect on the environment. I was displeased to find the column a thinly veiled antiimmigration piece.
The adverse effects of human population increase is a global problem but not an acceptable topic in many cultures, including ours. The unchecked increase in any species results in disaster. The columnist and readers would benefit from reading “Population Bomb” (Erlich, 1968) “Sand County Almanac” (Leopold, 1949), and visiting the websites populationconnection.org and growthbusters.org.
Population growth is beneficial to the employing class (cheaper labor) and the propertied class (scarcer resources) but for others it has brought crowding, rising resource costs and reduced freedom.
