July 4 open house showcases interior of Old Schoolhouse

During Creswell Heritage Foundation’s July 4 open house at the Old Schoolhouse on South 2nd Street that is undergoing restoration, two women peer beneath a painted canvas floor covering at the layer of old newspapers spread between the canvas and the original wood floors. The public was able to see the pre-restoration interior of the building and view some of the features CHF has discovered. Visitors could also see the exposed painted blackboard that dated from when the schoolhouse served as Creswell’s all-volunteer public library. Gini Davis/The Creswell Chronicle

One of the historical artifacts on display during an open house at the Old Schoolhouse on July 4. The event showcased the schoolhouse’s interior and historical items uncovered during Creswell Heritage Foundation’s ongoing restoration of the building. An estimated 150 people attended the open house. About 60 people visited from out of town, including 48 from the surrounding area and six from out of state. CHF added six people to their interested persons list, and six others signed up to help with the project, Creswell Heritage Foundation Verlean McCoy said. The Creswell Heritage Foundation is now writing grants and raising money for the exterior restoration project.
