With varsity teammate Bentley Watson away on vacation, Abby Mercer was the lone representative of the Creswell High School girls’ golf team at two tournaments last week – but it was a worthwhile outing, as Mercer won one tournament and placed second at the other.
Mercer shot a 45 to win a nine-hole tournament at Middlefield Golf Course in Cottage Grove on April 22 and shot a 108 during an 18-hole tournament at Diamond Woods Golf Course in Monroe on April 25 to place second overall.
Ciaragh Thompson of Junction City was the tournament medalist at Diamond Woods with a score of 100.
At Middlefield, Mercer got off to ”a little bit of a rough start,” said Creswell Head Coach Stan Mercer, but ”she kept her composure and played her best golf of the year over the closing stretch of holes” to come away with the victory.
The Diamond Woods course was difficult, with ankle-high rough and some wet conditions. Yet, despite those challenges, ”Abby drove the ball extremely well and played a great round of golf,” Mercer said.
The highlight of the day came on the par-five eighth hole, where Mercer smashed a fairway wood to inside 100 yards, then hit a wedge to approximately five feet from the pin. From there, ”facing a testy downhill five-footer, she rolled it right in the middle for a birdie four – the only birdie made by any golfer all day,” coach Mercer said.
Next up for Mercer may be representing Creswell as an individual competitor in the 4A/3A/2A/1A-SD3 Special District 3 Tournament, scheduled for May 6-7 at Rogue Valley Country Club.
”We are looking at entering her,” Mercer said.
