Equestrians qualify for state in 10 events

Five members of Creswell High School’s equestrian team – Ashley Anderson, Levi Bones, Grace Haga, Gracie Bones and Jane Marquess – have qualified to compete at state in 10 events after medaling in one or more events during the OHSET (Oregon High School Equestrian Teams) South Valley District season.
Athletes are awarded medals (gold, silver or bronze) and bids to state by placing first, second or third overall in an event for the three-meet district season. Creswell athletes earned three gold, one silver and five bronze medals.
The team of Ashley Anderson, Levi Bones, Grace Haga and Jane Marquess (with Gracie Bones as alternate) advance to state as district gold medalists in Freestyle Fours (Drill Team).
The team of Anderson, Gracie Bones, Levi Bones and Haga go to state as district gold medalists in Canadian Flags.
Levi Bones also qualified for state in two individual events: as district gold medalist in Breakaway Roping and as the bronze medalist in Working Rancher. Bones and Anderson will also compete at state as bronze medalists in Working Pairs, and he and Haga will compete at state as bronze medalists in Two-Man Birangle.
Anderson also goes to state as the silver medalist in Working Rancher.
Haga also qualified for state in three individual events: as the bronze medalist in both Steer Daubing and Barrels and in Pole Bending; although not a medalist in that event, she qualified for state by finishing in the top 10 percent. She is also first alternate to state in Figure 8.
And in an exciting turn of events, the team of Anderson, Levi Bones and Haga earned an automatic bid to state in Team Penning after breaking a district and state timed-event record during the final district meet of the season earlier this month. The trio penned three cows in only 28.37 seconds.
”The team qualifies for setting a record although they are not district medalists,” said Creswell Head Coach Lauri Thomas.
The team of Anderson, Levi Bones, Haga and Gracie Van Zandt are the second alternate to state in Team Versatility.
The 2019 OHSET State Championships will be held May 9-10 at the Deschutes County Fair and Expo Center in Redmond.
