Hovering doves

EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES WERE CAPTURED BY CRESWELL’S ED ”JAKE” JACKSON, SEEN AS THEY TRY TO FIND A PLACE TO LAND DURING THE FEBRUARY SNOW STORM. Jake Jackson

Fun Fact: This pale dove expanded its range spectacularly from the Middle East all the way across Europe during the 20th century. According to the National Audubon Society, the bird was introduced accidentally into the Bahamas in 1974, and their presence soon spread to the Florida mainland. Collared-doves expanded westward and northward from there since the 1980s. The species is now common across much of North America, as far northwest as Jackson’s backyard in Creswell. Oddly, the expansion has not yet penetrated the northeastern states, aside from a few records of strays.
