To show support for Missions Week, Creswell Church of Christ will welcome missionaries Kathy and Keith Ham to their service on Sunday, March 3 at 10 a.m, located at 380 Kings Row.
The couple visited the Church of Christ last year, Roger Scovil, missions director at the church said. ”There was a buzz all throughout the church” about the work they were doing.
The Hams serve with the Christian Missionary Fellowship Inc. (CMF) team in partnership with Missions of Hope International (MOHI). The Hams work with Kenyan nationals, Mary and Wallace Kamau, founders and directors of MOHI. The focus is on missionary work on the slums of Nairobi, Kenya.
”The Hams are Americans working with Kenyans to support them in any way they can,” he said. In addition to preaching gospel, they also meet the needs of families through a holistic ministry approach.
By partnering with the Kamaus, the Hams are able to reach out to ”the urban poor through training, microenterprise, education and other resources,” according to Hope International University. The Hams assist Kenyans with health education, community development, church leadership and staff development.
”They also have a microfinance loan program to help people start their own business while they live in the midst of this extremely impoverished, destitute slum,” Scovil said. Scovil explained that for Kenyans with no means of income, their alternatives are to steal or use negative methods to find a way to live, ”or, these people (the missionaries) come in and show them how to develop a business of their own.”
It’s a powerful ministry, Scovil said. ”What they’re doing is incredible.”
