The Creswell School Board met on Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. for their regular school board meeting. The board also met for executive session, which The Chronicle wrote about on Jan. 17.
Enrollment was up by three students in January, brining the total of 1,282 students in the district.
Under new business, Superintendent Todd Hamilton reviewed the current caps on district transfers. Enacted by the Oregon Legislature in 2011, open enrollment was one of five transferring methods; however, the provision is ”sunsetting,” making 2018-19 the last school year for students to transfer under open enrollment law.
Any student who transferred to a new district through the open enrollment prior to 2019-20 will be able to stay in the district; this sunsetting means districts shouldn’t go through the procedure in the spring of 2019 as students cannot enroll under that law the following academic year.
Although the Legislature may choose to extend the sunset during the 2019 legislative session, at this point until the Legislature takes action the sunset will be in effect.
The board will take action to approve the enrollment caps in the February meeting.
The board moved into executive session at 7:45 p.m. and returned to regular session at 8:26 p.m. The board meeting adjourned at 8:28 p.m.
The next school board meeting will be Feb. 13 at 7 p.m., the public is encouraged to join.
