The Cottage Grove Prospector and Gold Diggers Civic Pride Award 2018, was awarded to the Friends of the Cottage Grove Carousel. This award is a yearly presentation to a business or other group that has demonstrated works for the betterment of the community of Cottage Grove.
There will be photo opportunities with members of the carousel committee and former Mayor Tom Monroe, who is presently the President of Gold Diggers and Prospectors, along with outgoing president Bruce McDonald. This ceremony will take place 8 a.m. Monday morning at the King Estate Winery Distribution Center, Industrial Park, south Cottage Grove, on highway 99.
Most likely, the plaque will be attached to the carousel itself.
Cottage Grove Prospectors and Gold Diggers was formed in the 1960’s to celebrate and recognize the gold mining in the nearby Bohemia Mountains. It was said, in the early 1900’s, the streets of Cottage Grove were paved with gold, as many tailings from the goldmine ore crushing was used to pave the streets of Cottage Grove.
Also, a sub-committee of the carousel will be selecting 12 out of 15 large photographs to go on what is called the Rounding Boards – pictures around the top of the carousel. The committee will be selecting photographs representing the past history of Cottage Grove.
