The Creswell Chamber of Commerce’s First Annual Win a Window contest left four residents with cheery smiles on their faces after their names were drawn on Dec. 17.
The contest, new to Creswell, is a game to show your support for local businesses and get your shopping done for the holidays. Shoppers pick up game cards available at all participating merchants, fulfill the tasks required to collect stamps and drop off a full card to the Chamber office for a chance to win prizes from participating businesses.
There were three prize packages available to win that include gift certificates and gifts from local businesses – family, adults and kid packages.
”The purpose of this campaign was twofold,” said Pamela Palmer, Creswell Chamber administrative assistant, who helped spearhead this effort. One purpose was to encourage and promote shopping locally. The other, ”to bring public awareness to the participating businesses,” Palmer said.
Jim and Dorothy Shoop are the winners of the family window. Their gifts include a Harry and David basket from Banner Bank; a gift certificate from Travel Lane County; a gift card for Creswell Bakery; a gift certificate for Farmlands Market; gift certificates for Los Cabos; a winter preparedness set for the car, courtesy of Country Financial; City swag bags from City Hall; four one-hour passes to play at Elite GameSpot; books and puzzles from Creswell Library; a gift card for Blue Valley Bistro, compliments of Farmers Insurance; and a gift package from Crippen Design.
The winnings were just some perks, the Shoops said. Mostly, it’s just fun to shop locally.
”That’s why we did it – we did it just for the fun of it,” Dorothy said. ”We didn’t expect to win anything; I just love getting a sandwich from Farmlands and going to the Dairy Queen, so that right there was worth it. When we won, we were so surprised! All of it was so grand.”
City Recorder and Courts Clerk Roberta Tharp won the adult window. Her winnings include a Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey gift set, courtesy of Emerald Valley Spirits; a gift certificate for Emerald Valley Armory; a gift certificate to Creswell Healthmart Pharmacy; a one-year subscription to the The Creswell Chronicle and box of chocolates; a gift certificate from Travel Lane County; a gift certificate to Farmlands Market; a Creswell Bakery gift card; a winter preparedness set for the car, courtesy of Country Financial; a swag bag from City Hall; two day passes to play at Elite GameSpot; books and a puzzle from Creswell Library; and a gift card for the Bean Hopper, compliments of Farmers Insurance.
”I thought (the contest) was fun. I went into stores that I don’t normally go into, and the basket I won was wonderful,” Tharp said.
Tharp said she would go on her lunch break and mosey downtown to fill up her card. She said it didn’t take her long to complete, and had the card full in three or four days. She said she is looking forward to playing again next year.
Patty Furrer won the kids package, which includes an original holiday acrylic painting by Brenda Ivie; a Creswell Dairy Queen ice cream cake; six one-hour passes to play at Elite GameSpot; a Creswell Bakery gift card; another Creswell Bakery gift card, compliments of Farmers Insurance; books and a puzzle from Creswell Library; a gift certificate from Travel Lane County; a gift certificate to Creswell Healthmart Pharmacy; a gift certificate to Los Cabos; a gift certificate to Farmlands Market; a winter preparedness set for the car, compliments of Country Financial; a swag bag from City Hall; and a gift certificate to Drumronthai Thai Café.
For Furrer, it was fun getting out and going from store-to-store with her daughter, Colleen Tunnell.
”It was just fun being with her, going in and out of the stores,” Furrer said. ”Everyone in the stores were very cordial.”
She said the contest helped her get into stores she normally does not go in. ”I don’t get out that much and didn’t realize all the stores that are in the downtown area,” she said.
Palmer and Chamber Director Don Amberg, ”feel the campaign met its goals because there were people who visited businesses they would not have otherwise considered.”
Palmer said that the participation turnout was reasonable for the first year, but the stage is set for more success in 2019.
”Our plan for next year would be individual business windows around town displaying prizes for Win a Window, as well as more prizes and more businesses participating,” Palmer said.
