HSSZ: Basketball recaps

BOYS BASKETBALL

■ Cottage Grove: The Lions went 1-1 at the Sky-Em/Skyline Crossover event, beating Phoenix 62-61 before falling to No. 15 Mazama 74-61. Brennen Murphy and Cole Kishen led the way against Phoenix with 20 and 19 points, respectively. Murphy added 12 rebounds and 4 assists and Kishen had 7 boards; Cottage Grove had 13 steals.
■ Creswell: Creswell went 2-0 last week in spite of an injury to star senior AJ Hodge in the team’s first game against Harrisburg. The timeline on Hodge’s injury is still TBD according to head coach Jesse Thomas. The Bulldogs beat Harrisburg 47-37 thanks to 14 points and 3 steals from Max Velarde. Velarde then had 18 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals in the team’s 65-35 win over La Pine.
■ Pleasant Hill: The Billies extended their win streak to 9 after beating La Pine 63-29 and Sweet Home 58-56 in OT. Gavin Inglish fouled out for the Billies against Sweet Home with five minutes to go after scoring 20 points. Up two with 10 seconds left in OT, Pleasant Hill needed a stop to hold on and got just that as Matthew Dutton blocked Sweet Home’s 3-point attempt as time expired. Matthew Nguyen scored 11 points in the SH win and led the way against La Pine with 17 points.
■ Springfield: The Millers had two competitive games last week despite going 0-2. Springfield fell to Willamette 41-34 and to No. 7 Crater 61-44. Isaiah Navarrete led the way on offense for Springfield, putting up 16 points in the loss vs. Crater.
■ Thurston: Thurston had a tough 0-2 week. The Colts fell last Tuesday 59-47 to Class 6A No. 8 Roseburg before falling in their Midwestern League opener Friday 54-51 to No. 14 Ashland in heartbreaking fashion. Thurston led by five with 1:15 to go, but Ashland stormed back and won on an Izzy Golden buzzer-beater three. Despite the loss, Thurston had great all-around scoring as Hunter James, Walker Bonar and Nate Stiffler all had 12 points and Luke Newell chipped in 11. Bonar led the Colts in the Roseburg loss with 16 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

■ Cottage Grove: The Lions went 0-2 at the Sky-Em/Skyline Crossover event, falling to Mazama 50-15 and Hidden Valley 42-25. Cottage Grove went into half down only three to HV, but a 10-point deficit in the third quarter made a comeback too difficult. Mariah Bailey and Jaylee Lima both had 6 points to lead the way against HV. Bailey and Summer Lebow both had 3 points in the loss to Mazama.
■ Creswell: The Bulldogs started their league season 2-0, beating Harrisburg 49-44 and La Pine 61-23. Lauren Bailey and Samairah Quinones starred in both games. Against Harrisburg, Bailey finished with 19 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals while Quinones had 17 points, 8 rebounds and 5 steals. In the dominant win against La Pine, Quinones scored 17 points and Bailey chipped in 14 points and 6 rebounds.
■ Pleasant Hill: The Billies had another dominant week, beating La Pine 46-13 in their league opener before handling Class 4A Sweet Home 48-18. Scoring leaders against La Pine were a trio of sophomores as Brooke Weimer had 13 points and Claire Crawford and Cheyenne Green both chipped in 9. Crawford and Green led the team against Sweet Home with 14 and 8 points, respectively, and another sophomore Trinity Hawkins added 7.
■ Springfield: The Millers went 1-1 last week, losing to Class 6A No. 10 Willamette 40-31 before rebounding and winning their league-opener against No. 8 Crater 46-41. Junior Kayla Morris led the way against Willamette with 10 points and 3 assists while Danaeja Romero-Ah Sam had 7 points and 3 steals in the loss. In the win against Crater Romero-Ah Sam put up 19 points.
■ Thurston: The Colts stopped a four-game skid by going 2-0 last week, led by junior Bailey Tovey. On Tuesday, Thurston beat Roseburg 48-32 thanks to Tovey’s 17 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks. Addison Nelson added 14 points and Kylie Jones had 6 points, 6 boards and 5 assists. Friday, the Colts beat Ashland 47-45 as Tovey led the way again with 26 points and 9 rebounds. Stella Hall chipped in 10.
