Scribal Class

Easy Breezy Beautiful Paint Palettes (Or, how I make my scribal color palettes LOOK easy, simple, and balanced.)

The standard, pure colors of your scribal kit are of course lovely and useful…but eventually, you will probably want to start blending and creating colors. It’s frustrating to discover midway through a project that your colors don’t balance and complement each other quite in the way you envisioned – so let’s talk about how to plan, test and adjust a color palette BEFORE you’re 6 hours into a scroll.

Together we’ll cover some color theory, discuss different types of color palettes, and how to evaluate your scroll design or charter to determine your color needs. We will also cover some best practices for testing your palette out to determine how well the colors actually work together.

Each individual will build out a color palette for a project (real or imaginary) during our time together. You’ll need the following supplies:

Water color paper
Paintbrushes
Pencil and eraser
Ruler or straight edge
Gouache Paints (minimum: black, white, blue, yellow, red, green)
Two empty 6-well palettes or a larger size that can accommodate several colors
Water for your paints
Vessel for rinsing your brushes
Paint mixing tool (chopsticks, toothpicks, popsicles stick, palette knife, etc.)
Optional: rag or paper towels, brush rest

Here’s what I have in my kit (but it’s not required!):
W&N Gouache: Permanent White, Lamp Black, Red Ochre, Yellow Ochre, Spectrum Red, Spectrum Yellow, Ultramarine Blue, Sap Green
Holbein Gouache: Rich Gold, Silver
M Graham & Co Artists’ Gouache: Dioxazine Purple
