New Glenwood shelter honors Black history 

GLENWOOD – Lane County's newest homeless shelter at 1545 Brooklyn St. merges heart and history in Glenwood, honoring the legacy of a Black pastor who "helped everyone" and discriminated against none. 

The site of the Shankle Brooklyn Street Shelter holds old traditions, culture and community. The historic building once housed the Bethel Temple Church, the first Black church in Lane County. With Rev. Arthur Shankle, who died in 2012,  at the helm, it was once the backbone of the small African American community living in Springfield during the 1960s.
